Talking About It - Promoting Mental Health in Schools

An Educational Resource Pack (11-16) (video, activities, worksheets and handbook) by Department of Health. The pack aims to help teachers and pupils distinguish between mental health and mental illness, identify issues and factors which affect mental health, recognise support and interventions, develop skills to help in the promotion of mental health, reduce fear and stigma. Includes activities for staff and pupils.

Understanding Mental Health

By Katherine Greensmith This pack includes group activities for young people designed to promote awareness and understanding and to develop positive attitudes towards individuals with mental health problems. Sections include: ideas about mental health, models of mental illness, common mental disorders, mental health and society.

Quality Circle Time in the Secondary School

By Mosley and Tew This book provides a rationale, framework and whole school model for Quality Circle Time specifically for secondary schools and further education colleges. It offers over 100 activities and practical strategies to help build teachers confidence and Circle Time skills and will enable them to sustain the approach within their PSHE syllabus, tutorial time, subject teaching or as part of their work with pupils with special educational needs.

Tackling Stress in Schools a practical guide

By the Health Education Authority This training pack aims to persuade schools to take action about stress. It has been written primarily for use as INSET materials. There are 4 sections --all materials are photocopiable. Understanding stress, identifying stress, tackling stress in schools. The pack covers many areas including: management issues, managing change, school policies, time management, the 3 R's - rest relaxation and recreation.

Video made by Asian young women at Mulberry school with accompanying booklet and worksheets for use with young people aged 13-18 to explore issues around Mental Health. It can also be used as part of a training programme for teachers.

Samaritans Youth Pack

A teaching pack that supports teachers by providing resource materials and suggesting ways these may be used to facilitate the emotional health and well being of young people. PSHE curriculum areas covered include: dealing with emotions, Health Education, Self-Esteem and Talking about Relationships. Topic areas include: emotional health and well being, stress, anxiety and fear, isolation, depression, self-harm and suicide.

Young Carers Resource Pack for Schools

This resource pack is produced for schools by Surrey Young Carers. It provides an innovative approach to tackling issues in schools, with information to assist teachers in identifying and supporting young carers and and lesson plans which enable young people to address the issues of disability and caring. The pack contains teaching materials for Key stages 2 and 3. The materials are designed as a half term module of lessons to be integrated into schools' existing PSHE programmes. Ideas for Key Stage 1 and 4 activities are contained in the appendices.

Giving Sorrow Words

By Killick and Lindeman A 35 min video and 54 page manual that aims to give teachers the confidence to help pupils in schools deal with the effects of loss and bereavement. It demonstrates the stages of grief and offers practical skills and techniques which can help a person work through the emotions bereavement can bring. It can be used by a teacher working with a bereaved child or as part of a structured INSET.

Learning to Grieve - Life Skills for coping with losses for high school classes.

(Glassock and Rowling) A resource for teaching life skills for coping with losses for secondary school age students. The resource aims to enable teachers to explore these issues with young people and aims to teach young people the skills to be supportive to others, to express feelings (and thereby gain emotional control) and to perceive the need for and accept support.

Mind Matters Series

A set of 5 books by Marilyn Harvey that enable teachers, trainers, and youth workers to explore a range of issues related to mental health issues. All books include guidelines in facilitating activities, background information, photocopiable learning activities. Books cover the following topics: Stress, Relationships, Actions (Should I, Shouldn't I?), Self Esteem, Loss and Grief.
