Food Awareness Week 2008

Food Awareness Week (FAW) is a campaign designed to promote healthy eating and active lifestyles and supports the 'healthy eating' and ‘physical activity’ components of the National Healthy Schools Program. Following the success of last year’s campaign, Food Awareness Week will be running again, from 9th to 13th June 2007. The focus for this years’ FAW will be to support the ‘Year of Food and Farming’ in its aims of giving children first-hand experience of seeing, growing and cooking food.

Food Awareness Week - What’s involved?

The aim of Food Awareness Week (FAW) 2008 will be for schools to run a practical food-related activity week using the free Food Awareness Week pack, Year of Food and Farming Resources and, where possible, help from health-related organizations. It is hoped that schools will be able to show/sell produce harvested or prepared during FAW on a home produce stall at their school summer fetes.

To assist you with your planning, and to give you lots of great ideas for different age groups, a free Food Awareness Week Pack with over 60 activity sheets is available for your school. It is a practical and useful resource suitable for use with all children. The pack is being revised for 2008 and a new pack will be sent to all schools who register for FAW.

As this year's FAW will be run in conjunction with Year of Food and Farming, all registered schools will also be sent free vegetable seeds with planting instructions and related teacher resources. It is hoped that these seeds will be ready for harvest by FAW.

What you need to do?

Register your school for Food Awareness Week by emailing with your school name and FAW co-ordinator (including their best contact number and email address) including ‘FAW registration’ in the subject line. You will then be sent the seed packets, new free FAW pack, updated contact information and tips on how best to run a successful FAW.
